TTO 23981 July 2024 Progress https://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/2024/08/27/tto-23981-july-2024-progress/ https://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/2024/08/27/tto-23981-july-2024-progress/#respond Tue, 27 Aug 2024 16:43:41 +0000 https://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/?p=545

Progress has been steady in the last two months. With the water tanks safely mounted into the roof space over the toilet area, work started in replacing the original toilet door frames and new panelling cut to size for the toilet walls.
Once the toilet walls were in place the corridor and vestibule flooring along with the toilet floors could be fitted. We no longer had to walk the plank over the gaps.

Work commenced on fitting the water feed pipes to the tanks and checking with the plans as to where they ran.

At the north end five of the six teak panels have now been fitted and the sixth
is ready to fit. They are secured every four inches by brass screws along both
long edges. For the first fix we used Phillips headed screws to hold the panels
in place against the curve of the coach. Four of the five panels have had the
screws changed to slotted head brass screws.

The remaining north end side door has been removed as it will need quite a bit
of TLC, it has dropped by over half an inch. The east side toilet opening window
was removed to aid cleaning it and found to be beyond repair, so a new one
will need fabricating.

Work has now commenced on the sanding and preparation of the frame on
the east side ready for panelling. 6 teak panels have been extracted from the
store and one has been cut to size ready to begin sanding, shellac sizing and
varnishing.

A short update on the 2 LNER Beavertails.

1719 went on hire to the Strathspey railway once its overhaul was completed last year It had a successful season running around 8,000 miles last year and then spent the winter in covered storage. The preseason check found 1 spring had slipped but this was soon fixed and the coach is now back in regular use.

1729 went into storage at the one;one facility in Margate and was behind Bittern, but could not be viewed. Bittern has now been moved and 1729 is being/has been moved into the public display area, where it should be for a few years

TTO 23981 April Update https://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/2024/05/01/tto-23981-april-update/ https://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/2024/05/01/tto-23981-april-update/#respond Wed, 01 May 2024 14:17:26 +0000 https://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/?p=523

April has seen visible signs of progress on this coach.

The north end of the coach has had the connecting door and teak panels removed, the door requires remedial work and the teak panels were damaged beyond use other than as templates.

The framing at this end had all the old screws and nails removed and all the brackets checked and replaced as necessary, this area is now ready for a coat of wood primer prior to the re-fitting of the new teak panels.

Suitable teak panels were extracted from our teak store and moved into the coach. The four central end panels have all been cut to length and checked against the framing. Three panels have had holes drilled and countersunk along the vertical edges, every four inches ready for the brass screws. This was followed by sanding with 120 grit then 180 grit sand paper to produce a smooth surface, a coat of a shellac size was then applied to seal the surface. The panels will have at least one coat of yacht varnish before fitting to the coach.

The fourth central panel is awaiting the holes drilling, then sanding and sizing. The outer edge of the last two panels will be shaped as necessary to the profile of the coach once the others are in situ.

The plug and vent pipe were fitted to one of the toilet water tanks, so both were ready to place back into the roof space. This has now been done and we have a space on the carriage floor. Now we can re-fit the toilet door frames and the various pieces of walling around the toilets.
